Matthew: Future Kingdom, Now

As we read through Matthew, we find Jesus establishing a ‘New Thing’ as he proclaims and shares about the Kingdom of God and challenges us to have a bigger idea of God and also lays out an agenda of what it means to follow and serve God in this world.
Matthew records only a small percentage of the things Jesus said and did. The carefully crafted text shows a clear transition from a culture wrapped up in a discussion about ‘the kingdom of Israel’ to Jesus discussing ‘the kingdom of heaven’.
As we work through this book together, we will be looking for indicators that God is doing a new thing, and that the kingdom of heaven will include ‘gentiles’, people from all over the world, and not just be for Jewish people.
We will also be asking questions such as; how is Jesus’ teaching new and different to what was in the culture around him? Why does Jesus use stories to teach about the kingdom of heaven? Why not teach about it more plainly? We will observe how the Scribes and Pharisees respond to Jesus’ message about this kingdom of heaven and contrast their response with the response of others in the culture.
Matthew is an account of revolutionary change. Jesus has come to change the world. As we journey through this book, it is an opportunity to reflect on what the revolutionary and disruptive message of Jesus means for us in the city of Hobart in 2024, and how we can better align ourselves with Jesus.
